We at the Coop live to be outdoors. We spend all of our free time on trails, at crags and up in the mountains. Because of this, we are grateful for the companies who embody a statement of minimal waste enthusiasm. These are companies who create products meant to survive season after season – who dedicate time to clean-ups and sustainable practices. This holiday season, gift a special someone items that break the commercial mold and support the outdoors. The products in this guide are all carefully selected to ensure our planet is affected as little as possible with how they are manufactured, what wasteful items they replace, as well as their longevity. So really, you aren’t just gifting a fantastic shoe or reusable straws, you’re gifting a promise that we will always be able to take off early Friday afternoon, bound for adventures.
Plastic water bottles, how 2002 am I right? Lifestraw solves the issue of wasteful disposable bottles out on the trail. With their filters, backpackers are no longer required to carry in all of the water they will need for a hike. We have included Lifestraw in previous gift guides, and for good reason – they are a great stocking stuffer. These personal water filters are lightweight and easy on the wallet.
Okay, let’s continue talking packaging. Does anyone else find it absolutely revolting how much plastic goes into packaging our food? Help a friend avoid this unnecessary waste with Sea to Summit’s X-Seal products. Opt out of the brown bag and in for the reusable & sealable bowls, cups and sets. They even have serveware.
Minimal waste isn’t all about packaging. A large portion of waste comes from the constant repurchasing of items. We support brands who create items made to last, made to be produced only once and used for a lifetime’s worth of adventures. Rio creates the most proficient line of fishing equipment out there. They have dedicated hours upon hours to ensure their products are of a premium quality and will last to catch fish after fish. One main principle of living the minimal waste mentality is purchasing products built to last. Their Fly Line and Leader make excellent gifts for the fisherman on your list.
Trees are great, aren’t they? We should have more trees in our world, and Oboz agrees. For each pair of Oboz shoes purchased, one tree is planted. As of publishing our guide 1,553,321 trees have already been planted. Replace your buddies nasty old boots with a new pair, Women’s or Men’s and go hug a tree while you’re at it.
Wastes cannot always be avoided, especially ones which have already accumulated. Because of this, we are grateful for companies who address such issues head on. Adidas partnered up with Parley to tackle ocean pollution. They created this sandal with plastics recycled from various ocean clean-ups.
Here is another brand dedicated to cleaning up our playground. United by Blue removes one pound of trash from various waterways per each product sold. Their products are made with sustainable materials and built to last. This means you can use these copper straws drink after drink. No more disposable plastic! Take the gift one step further and include the copper tumbler for a polished set. On top of everything, United by Blue hosts Blue Friday. Participants across the nation are provided a gift bag with the necessities to spend an hour on the Friday after Thanksgiving removing trash from their local beach, park, or trail.
