I’m 35 & I have created the ultimate life! It has been a wild 15 years of constant failures that turn into breathtaking opportunities, I hope you enjoy reading about it as much as I do living it.
Let me start by saying don’t do what I did: quit your life and turn a $400 1980’s car into your home and travel the world; unless that’s your true passion and calling.
In May of 2003, during my 3rd year of college, I moved out of my apartment and onto the floor of the climbing gym. By 2009 I was – and still am – living full time in a 1988 28sqft Ford Festiva, now known as the #PeaceLoveCar. For over a decade I have been documenting and sharing my life with the intention of inspiring others to identify their passions and live their dreams.
The following are just incase you think your dreams are mutually exclusive:
-I cofounded YogaSlackers with my best friend and housemate… I mean car-mate.
-I even eventually finished college (7 years) with a degree in Social Entrepreneurship.
-And I have been on a loving enduring relationship for 5 years! Yes, I did convince a woman to move into a car with me!
As I look back on a decade of sharing my passions in several different ways…
-Snow kiting across North Dakota (to raise awareness for wind power www.2xtm.com),
-On a 1100 mile bike tour around colorado teaching slacklining and Acrobatics to raise money for “Beads of Courage”
-Filming the 1st place team in the Patagonian Expedition Race, a 10 day 700km human powered event
-Driving a 7hp rickshaw across the subcontinent of India in 2 weeks raising money for the Frank water project
-Driving to all 49 continental states (47,000 miles in a car with 430,000miles on the odometer) in 8 months – with the love of my life – teaching people to play more through Handstands, Slacklining and AcroYoga (www.peacelovecar.com)
And too many other adventures for just 3000 characters…
I realized that society has fooled us into thinking we need to serve the system but in reality the system was created to serve us! There is no magic potion drink or perfect time to do anything. I left the path in 2003 and followed my heart which lead me to a $400 car with a salvage title which in turn let my dreams drive me to where I am today! Sitting in Tahiti on a 36hr layover with $93 in my bank account, I have friends of all types across the globe and a lifestyle I am proud of.
I had no grand plan in 2002 and you don’t need one either, Your dreams will lead you to exactly where you need to be you if you let them, just let go and the world will catch you and most importantly it will give you the chance to catch others! If you have a dream, go for it. Regardless of how silly or dangerous anyone else tries to make you think it will be. It is your life; live it your way!
This is my happy place: the sky. Well, I guess I have a lot of happy places. I grew up hiking, fishing, and camping with my family in the wilds of Montana. We also spent a lot of time on the road–searching for secret hot springs in Idaho, poaching roadside campsites in Yellowstone to avoid camping fees, learning to paraglide in Utah at the ripe old age of 14. My dad put me in a climbing harness and taught me how to climb when I was 5; I was absolutely terrified.
One summer we drove to Alaska and back in our Ford Explorer; me and my brother fighting over the line down the middle of the backseat all the way. I’d like to say that I’ve grown up and learned a lot about life, but not much has changed really. Here I am bumming around in my version of a dreamhouse: a 2016 Sprinter Van converted into the perfect adventure mobile. Still looking for free camping, still searching for the perfect hot spring, still terrified of climbing.
My boyfriend and I are such gear junkies that we had to buy a cargo trailer to bring all our toys along on our travels. We like to call it the garage. Whether I’m deep in the backcountry on a multi-day excursion with the girls, on the river braving icy whitewater death on my paddleboard, flying around the Tetons on my paraglider, or riding wintery singletrack on my fatbike, I’m at my best when I’m in wild places. And the van is perfect tool to keep me going on adventures. Having all the comforts of home and all the gear no matter how far we roam keeps me outside more: in my happy place.
And at the end of the day it’s always there waiting for me. Stove ready to cook epic vanritos, one step away from the outdoors, with the most comfortable bed on earth. I’ve got some big plans and big dreams for the year: from paragliding and SUPing in Hawaii to rafting the Grand Canyon, to biking slickrock in Moab. From backpacking the Teton Crest Trail to speedflying in the Wasatch. From hike-and-paddleboard excursions to remote Wyoming backcountry lakes and paramotoring in the desert Southwest. I’ve got a few van improvement projects on the docket too, and a #vanlife website under construction. If you’re looking for me, I’ll be in my happy place.
