The La Sportiva Katakis are a mash-up between the legendary Katana and the newly popular Otaki. I was lucky enough to test out these new shoes in the beautiful forest of Squamish, BC and discovered that they are very effective for vertical face climbing to slightly overhanging bouldering and sport climbing. Because of the stiff midsole taken from the Otakis, I had no problem trusting any of the small feet on Squamish’s problems such as: Phat slab, Black Slabbath, Backwards in an easy chair, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and many more. The more I wore these shoes, the more comfortable they became, partly because of the soft, breathable, neoprene tongue from the Katanas. I ended up being able to wear them going from boulder to boulder around the forest. Another thing I love about these shoes is that they’ve taken the “S-Heel” from the Otakis. This is, in my opinion, La Sportiva’s best heel cup. It’s very stable and extremely sticky on virtually anything you put it on. Since my return home, I’ve been able to climb with the Katakis at a local crag called Black Mountain. I was very happy to see that these shoes performed just as amazing if not better as they did in Squamish. I definitely recommend them as part of your arsenal.
The TX 2 is the lighter and more easily stowable version of the already popular TX3’s. These shoes are lined with Vibram mega grip rubber to ensure that no foot will ever slip on any terrain you throw it’s way. The one piece knit upper optimizes breathability and drainage in case you encounter some wet trails, and the bungee attached around the heel of each shoe allows you to snap the pair together for easy carrying. One thing I have noticed while testing out the TX2’s, is that they perform very well as a trail running shoe. Offering great stability, cushion, and comfort I found myself running to every boulder with ease. Nick and I wore these shoes non-stop in Squamish and they proved themselves time and time again on durability, traction, and comfort. I would recommend them to anybody.
No matter how many emails I send La Sportiva to stop making the best climbing shoes and clothes on the market, they will not listen to me. The Bolt Pant goes back to the basics of clothing, eliminating all the distractions of, say, painters pants and letting you focus on the send. The articulated knees and gusseted crotch ensure that you are not hindered in your movement as you go for that yoga pose move on your sicky proj.
I may still question whether I am pronouncing the name of these shorts correctly, but I do not question whether I should wear them for those warmer days of climbing. The Chironicos are made of Cordura fabric, the most durable fabric I have ever used for climbing clothes. It’s almost as if La Sportiva expects you to rock climb in these!
“Dude. That tank is so sicky gnar, dude. Like, dude. Seriously, dude.” Yeah, yeah, yeah. We get that your vocabulary is limited, but your wardrobe should not be. Let the ladies see those biceps flow freely from that organic cotton. If you got it, you might as well flaunt it. But, in case you feel that you will go unnoticed in your sexy tank, La Sportiva has made sure the colors will turn heads. Yup, you got her attention, now you better climb like Adam Ondra.
The Talus Pant has become my official “go to” pants. Let’s say I am going on a date, Talus pant. Maybe I am planning on doing the PCT, Talus pant. Okay, I need to impress some businessmen with my new invention idea, Talus pant. I have even used them for rock climbing. What can’t these pants do?
TX Light Jacket
This technical softshell is designed for alpine climbing objectives, but has been my companion for the last two months of bouldering. The breathability allows you to wear it while hiking to the boulders without overheating. The Cordura fabric puts your mind at ease, the jacket will hold up to all that bushwhacking you do to find that hidden gem awaiting an FA. If you’re still not convinced, the DWR coating and quick drying fabric will keep you protected against the elements while you’re in upper, upper, mega super upper chaos canyon. Colorado never saw you coming.
TX Top T Shirt
Are you a sweaty, smelly mofo like myself? It’s probably time to consider the TX Top that manages moisture and fights bacteria like Mr. Clean. This shirt can withstand the daily abuse of climbing, as the shoulders are reinforced and is comfortable enough to wear just for funsies. The fabric is Bluedesign approved, so now you’re not only going green, but you’re going blue. Look at you caring for the planet.
